Passing the Torch

Back in the ’90s, I had the privilege of assisting my mentor, Robert Henshaw-Suder, as he photographed the legendary personalities of the WDVE Morning Show. I was just starting my own journey as a photographer, maybe imagining that one day I’d be the one creating those portraits.
Fast forward all these years, and there I was at iHeartRadio, camera in hand, photographing the very voices that have been part of my life for decades and it all hit me at once!
In a world of playlists and Spotify, I still turn on the radio. I love the voices, the spontaneity, the laughter, the stories, and the feeling that someone is right there with you, choosing some songs you might like. These voices have made me laugh and kept me company through busy workdays, and rainy afternoons sitting in traffic.
Meeting Michelle Michaels was one of those unexpectedly emotional moments. Her voice carried me through some pretty tough jobs when I was first building my photography business (in a basement splicing 8 mm movies to VHS tapes is one I won’t forget). I had listened to her for so many years without ever wondering what she looked like. Then suddenly there she was! Warm, funny, and like a friend I always knew. I got giddy and it honestly brought tears to my eyes.
At the same time, I couldn’t help but think of Robert. Standing there with my camera, I felt the passing of the torch. Years ago I was the assistant, watching and learning beside him. Now here I am in charge, documenting the next chapter of Pittsburgh radio.
Life has a funny way of coming full circle and for this girl who still loves turning on the radio and hearing the voices of Pittsburgh it was a day I’ll never forget.
