Joanna moves on

I have had the joy of photographing the lovely Joanna Schmidt, former Soloist with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, for many years. She has such a powerful, compelling presence on stage, yet during our photo shoots she brings a quiet magic, grace, and warmth that always shines through.

I was so surprised to learn that she recently decided to leave the company. After 14 incredible seasons, she’s ready for a new chapter. While I was never a professional dancer, I still remember how difficult it was to step away from ballet, even as a student. Dance becomes such a part of who you are, and I can only imagine the mix of emotions that comes with deciding when it’s time to move forward.

We created these portraits a few months ago. At the time, I didn’t know she was preparing to say goodbye to the stage – but she did. Looking back now, these photographs feel different. They hold a sense of reflection, strength, and transition that I couldn’t quite put my finger on when I pressed the shutter but I somehow was feeling something in the air that day.

Moments like these remind me why I love what I do. A photograph doesn’t just capture what someone looks like. It preserves a moment in their story. Sometimes we don’t realize the significance of that moment until much later!
